Hey, What About That Sign?
The iconic Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada sign is an obligatory photo-op destination for visitors from around the world. The 25-foot tall landmark was created in 1959 by Betty Willis, who worked for Western Neon Company, and cost a mere $4,000 to manufacture and install.
In the beginning, access was limited. In fact, getting that perfect shot meant you’d have to jaywalk on Las Vegas Boulevard and dodge speeding cars just to make it happen. That was quite risky business. Now, you don’t have to play frogger to take a photo. There’s plenty of car, bus and limo parking right in front of the sign, thanks to a multitude of improvements made in 2008, 2012 and 2015.
In 2009, on the sign’s 50th anniversary, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. And did you know you can buy a piece of this history? When lights in the sign burn out, they’re sold as commemorative souvenirs! The proceeds are donated to charity, of course.
